American charity supports women fighters in the fight against ISIS
Spirit of America equipping all-female Peshmerga unit with life-saving first aid kits
Los Angeles – May 18, 2016 – Having recently returned from Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Spirit of America, a citizen-funded nonprofit charity based in the United States, today announced that it will equip an all-female Peshmerga unit with individual first aid kits (IFAK) as they help liberate their country from the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.
Over the last two years, the fighters of the Kurdish Peshmerga have proven their mettle as one of the U.S. military’s most reliable partners in the operation to dismantle and defeat the Islamic State. Serving alongside the males are the females of the Peshmerga. The women, many of whom have suffered firsthand during the conflict, go through the same training and shoulder the same burden of defending their homeland against the onslaught of the Islamic State. Having supported other Peshmerga units in the past, Spirit of America is likewise supporting the all-female unit as they prepare to play a pivotal role in future military operations.
Working closely with the U.S. Army civil affairs team in Erbil, Spirit of America funded IFAKs that include the basic medical necessities for the battlefield: tourniquets, bandages, and more. Soldiers equipped with IFAKs have a better chance of surviving on the battlefield, and they fight knowing that if they are wounded, their buddies can take care of them. SoA provided 255 IFAKs, enough to equip an entire all-female Peshmerga battalion.
Colonel Nahida Ahmad Rashid, the commander officer of the unit, called the IFAKs an “important part of training soldiers and battlefield tactics.” She added, “We always want to serve our country and protect ourselves. ISIS kills women, violates women. We fight to protect ourselves.”
Spirit of America founder and chief executive officer, Jim Hake, emphasized the organization’s solidarity with the Peshmerga and other fighting forces in Iraq who are combatting ISIS, “The soldiers of the Peshmerga have been one of America’s most reliable on-the-ground partners. We appreciate their extraordinary commitment in the fight against terrorism and their service and sacrifice in defense of their homeland, and ours.”
