Washington, DC -- United States Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC) members received a private briefing from Dr. Najmaldin Karim, the Governor of Kirkuk Province in Iraq, about security in the province and what Kirkuk can offer investors.
UKSBC President David Tafuri gave the welcoming remarks at the briefing and introduced the governor to USKBC members.
Tafuri said, “We welcome the opportunity to speak with our friend Dr. Najmaldin Karim and hear his perspective on the ongoing situation in Kirkuk and broadly in Iraq.”
Governor Karim thanked USKBC members for hosting him and proceeded to discuss security and economic issues in Kirkuk. He said that provincial forces have successfully and continuously defended the city against ISIS since last year and highlighted what the province has done for Iraqi internally displaced persons (IDPs) that have fled to the province from other parts of Iraq. Gas fields in the province are in better shape because of ISIS’ failure to attack these targets.
Governor Karim said that the Government of Iraq has provided budgets for the salaries of Kirkuk government employees. On the other hand, there is a lack of financing for provincial development and projects.
Governor Karim encouraged USKBC members to visit Kirkuk and consider investing in the province. He stated that, “We are starting to see a lot of interest from multinational corporations that are interested in Kirkuk investment.”
Subhi Khudairi, a senior official with USKBC board member Khudairi Group said, “Governor Karim provided member companies with valuable insight into the situation on the ground in Kirkuk and the road ahead for the province.”
