US-Kurdistan Business Delegation Delivers Humanitarian Support to Internally Displaced Yazidi Students in Iraqi Kurdistan
12/15/2016 (Dohuk, Kurdistan Region of Iraq) – An international delegation of business and humanitarian leaders led by the United States-Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC) has provided funding and distribution of more than 125 school uniforms for internally displaced students who have found shelter in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The distribution was conducted by the USKBC delegation in partnership with Linking the World and EDGE Institute.
The school uniforms were distributed to students in the Shariya IDP camp, which houses more than 18,000 internally displaced Yazidi’s from the Sinjar region of Iraq. The Yazidi’s fled a genocidal attack on August 3, 2014, many of them eventually finding refuge within the Kurdistan region. The school uniforms were distributed to 125 of the most vulnerable students in the camp, those who are orphaned, former captives of ISIS, or whose family members remain under ISIS captivity.
“These uniforms form part of the armor in which we are able to protect these innocent children from violent extremists” said Mina Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Linking the World.
As the operation to liberate Mosul and surrounding areas from the control of the so-called Islamic State (or ISIS) is still on-going, neighboring Kurdistan continues to provide refuge to more than 1.8 million internally displaced Iraqi’s and Syrian refugees. The conflict with ISIS and the massive humanitarian crisis has introduced tremendous strain on the resources of the Kurdistan region since 2014. The response to the humanitarian crisis by both local and international actors has shown an incredible resolve to maintain the religious and ethnic diversity of the region, directly countering the targeted violence of religious extremists.
“In a time of incredible challenges, this delegation and this support shows we remain as committed as ever to supporting the Kurdistan region and its people,” said David Tafuri, President, USKBC.
The delegation of nearly 30 business and humanitarian leaders, sponsored by the United States – Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC), is meeting with key leaders in both the government and private sector. The visit is a show of both continued support for the efforts of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a sign of belief in the future of Iraq.
“The tangible support from the delegation in humanitarian efforts, particularly in education, is a component piece of the larger investment these businesses are making out of a belief in the long-term prosperity of the region,” said Jeremy Barker, Director of Operations, EDGE Institute.
